Let’s Get Real about Fungus

Let’s get real. No one really wants to discuss what I am about to say: nail fungus. We feel like it is one of those taboo topics. Even though it is a common condition, it seems like we have some sort of shame when we deal with it. That being said, I am here to change that stigma!

So, nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is not something to be ashamed of because trust me, a lot of people have it. It is a really common condition that many people have small amounts of without really knowing they have nail fungus. It starts as a small white or yellow spot just underneath the fingernail or toenail.

(Go ahead and check to see if you have it, I know you’re already doing it!)

Anyway, the longer the fungus grows and becomes deeper, it can eventually become a bigger problem. Prolonged and problematic nail fungus can cause discoloration, thick, and brittle nails. Some other symptoms that signal you should get treatment for the nail fungus are distorted nail shape, dark-colored under the nail, and a slightly funky smell.

What causes nail fungus?

People that are exposed to hot and humid environments, such as public showers in gyms, at pools, or in college dormitories, on a regular basis are more susceptible to develop nail fungus. If you are regularly in such environments, it is important to wear protective footwear or shower shoes to lessen the chances of contracting a nail fungal infection.

At Luminessence, we can help you get the proper treatment for your nail fungus. We use Nail Genesis, which can clear the under nail fungus temporarily. A series of 3-5 treatments usually performed once a month can provide great results. Tiny pulses of light penetrate the toenail or fingernail problem area to target the fungus underneath. The energy from the laser kills the fungus without any damage to the surrounding healthy nail or skin. Depending on the area needed to be treated, it is around 10-20 minutes for treatment. It’s a virtually painless treatment and the results of a happy healthy nail are worth every bit of it.

Give us a call to talk about what we can do for you, and we want to get your nails as good as they can be!
