Why Does Hair Thin When We Get Older?

by | Nov 19, 2021 | Tips & Tricks

Look, it happens. Hair thins as we age, and honestly, we shouldn’t even be ashamed about it. Hellooooo, it literally happens to everyone. If you are experiencing thinning hair, I can promise you that you are not alone and everyone is dealing with the same thing. However, I totally get that it can be frustrating and you want to keep your hair look the best you can make it be! So today we will be talking about why hair thins as well as how to treat it!

The Thinning Process:

So as you may or may not know, your hair is made up of protein strands. A single strand of hair has a normal life of anywhere between 2 to 7 years (wow!). On average, your hair grows somewhere around 0.5 inches a month, a total of 6 inches a year. However, your hair can grow faster or slower than others. This is all determined by genetics, diet, age, and your overall health.

Therefore as we age, hair gets a shorter hair cycle and the hair becomes shorter and finer, most of the time starting to fall out. For women, menopause can be a huge factor into hair falling out beginning in your 40s. But! No need to fret, you’ve got options…

Treatments: Keralase Hair Restoration vs. PRP Hair Rejuvenation

At Luminessence, we offer both Keralase Hair Restoration and PRP Hair Rejuvenation treatments. We want you to have the treatment that you’re the most comfortable with, so we are more than happy to talk in depth about which one is right for you. In the meantime, let’s get into a few differences between the two methods.

Keralase treatment uses a Lutronic Ultra laser to create “microchannels” that help absorb the special KeraFactor serum. There is little to no pain and there is no recovery time. Heck yes!

Also, the serum is a highly concentrated mix of growth hormones and proteins that are made to specifically boost all stages of the hair life cycle. Super rad.

So, PRP treatments are non-surgical procedures that also help restore hair loss. However, this treatment is different from the Keralase laser treatment most namely because it uses needles and relies on the patient’s own platelets. The plasma is separated from blood drawn from the patient, and it is injected directly into the scalp, promoting hair follicles to remain in the growth phase longer.
